This is Abasi-maenyin’s Newsletter: a digital space that aggregates Nigeria’s literary—film & books—and social contemporary culture into a valuable resource.
I’ve experimented with Wordpress and Medium before, but Substack has an interface which suits my goals and literary vanity. A modest way to say the type fonts here are celebrity lookalikes of Palvino and Garamond, which I absolutely adore. It makes prose feel like poetry. But that’s just me.
This space is a cavity meant to hold my thoughts on subjects like films and books from Nigeria, especially where these art forms converge and diverge, how they inform us and not. Sometimes I’ll analyze why certain patterns of mediocrity pop up in our art & evaluate the extent to which political decrepitude hampers literary growth.
In between social commentary and how-to guides on writing and storytelling, I’ll talk about contemporary culture trends, speculating what long-, and short-term effects they may have on us.
I’d hate to bore you—I, too, cannot tolerate boredom—so, I promise each sentence will read like the last lines of angry poems and the follow-ups to come off like the opening lines of groundbreaking novels. Be assured you’re in good hands. I promise to give you professional pieces from a unique lens.
Promise me two things though: that you’ll engage with the pieces as they speak to you. Writers need more validation than celebrities. I want to build a community based on recommendations—the best form of marketing. When you’re done, pass the piece on, forward the link to someone you think will value it.
Don’t forget to subscribe.
Welcome to my beautiful mind.
